Description

Deep sleep is a blend that combines the three sisters of sleep: valerian, hops and passionflower. These herbs in combination work in synergy to aid sleep onset and duration and have been shown to be as effective as benzodiazepines in several studies.

Valerian is often described as “Nature’s Valium,” and has been used medicinally to treat sleep disorders and as a sedative since the middle ages. Compounds like valerenic acid and valerenol found in valerian root can increase and modulate GABA receptors within the body. GABA is a chemical messenger that helps regulate nerve impulses in the nervous system and is one of the main neurotransmitters responsible for sleep regulation. When these are increased, it produces a sedative effect within the body, encouraging deep relaxation and sound sleep. Valerian root decreases the time in which it takes to fall asleep and also extends and improves the quality of sleep.

Passionflower is known for its anxiolytic, hypnotic and sedative actions and has been shown to help relieve symptoms of sleep disorders, restlessness and anxiety. Passionflower has been shown to improve sleep quality and improve the duration of restful sleep.

Hops has a natural sedative effect. It has been shown to increase the quality and quantity of sleep. It works to enhance GABA levels in the brain and lower body temperature. Falling core body temperature is one important physiological step towards sleep and inducing drowsiness.

Catnip, sometimes also called catmint or field balm, is part of the mint family. It is traditionally used as a herbal remedy for restlessness, nervousness and anxiety. Nepetalactone acid compounds in catnip help relax the body into a restful state that promotes sleep.

The menthol component of peppermint and spearmint causes your muscles to relax, relieving tension, anxiety and stress and allowing a more restful sleep. They are both great digestive aids as well that help calm an upset stomach and help digestion.

Linden has several sedative properties that assist with falling asleep, reducing anxiety and calming restless nerves.

Nutmeg has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine to induce sleep and relieve stress. It has a natural calming effect when consumed in small doses and can calm muscles and nerves.

This blend is slightly bitter, spicy and minty. The smell of this tea definitely packs a punch as valerian root is known to be quite pungent, but is balanced with the sweetness of mint and linden. This powerful blend calms skeletal muscles and the nervous system to help you to get the sleep you need and deserve.
