Description
Traditionally made in China’s Yunnan province, this unique fermented tea dates back to the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). Merchants would pack the tea into bricks and travel great distances over difficult, treacherous terrain. These perilous journeys could take months or even years to complete. At journey’s end, people began to notice that the resulting aged tea became significantly less bitter, smoother and richer. The resulting aged tea became highly sought after and eventually reserved only for royalty.
Modern Ripe Pu-erh is a sped up version of its predecessor. The tea undergoes a “wet piling” process in which the loose tea leaves are piled and sprayed with water and then left to ferment in a hot and humid space for up to seven weeks allowing fermentation to occur. After drying, the result is a sweet and floral tea with earthy undertones that some describe as woody.
Along with the enhanced flavour that is achieved, Ripe Pu-erh is said to introduce beneficial bacteria and probiotics into the gut, while encouraging blood sugar control, curbing hunger and assisting in weight management.
